Google Docs voice typing

Google Docs has built-in voice typing, but it has limits. Here is how to use it — and when an AI dictation extension works better.

Type by voice on every website — free Chrome extension, 15 minutes a day, no account.Add to Chrome — free

1. Built-in Google Docs voice typing

  1. Open a document in Chrome and go to Tools → Voice typing (or press Ctrl+Shift+S / Cmd+Shift+S).
  2. Click the microphone and speak. Say “period”, “comma” or “new line” for punctuation in supported languages.
  3. Limits: it works only in Chrome, only inside Google Docs and Slides, and stops if you click away from the document.

2. AI dictation that adds punctuation for you

  1. With Voice Typing AI you click into the document, press Alt+Shift+D and just talk — punctuation and capital letters are added automatically.
  2. It also works outside Docs: email, chats, forms, notes — and in Edge and Brave.

How to use it

  1. Install Voice Typing AI from the Chrome Web Store (free) and allow the microphone once.
  2. Click into any text field — an email, a document, a chat box, a form.
  3. Press Alt+Shift+D once and speak. When you pause, the text appears with punctuation and capital letters.
  4. Say “new line” or “new paragraph” for line breaks. 15 free minutes every day, no account.

FAQ

Why does Google Docs voice typing not add punctuation?

The built-in tool only adds punctuation when you say it (“comma”, “period”) and only for some languages. AI dictation adds it automatically from your intonation and sentence structure.

Can I use voice typing in Google Docs on Brave or Edge?

The built-in tool is Chrome-only. An extension such as Voice Typing AI works in Chrome, Edge and Brave.

Is it free?

Yes — 15 minutes of dictation every day for free, with no account or sign-up.

Which languages are supported?

More than 50, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Arabic. The language is detected automatically, or you can pick it in the extension menu.

Is my voice stored?

No. Audio is sent over an encrypted connection to be converted to text and is not stored. Details are in the privacy policy.
